I want to sew!

I decided over the weekend that I would like to start sewing. It's something I've always been interested in and have always felt that it was something I would enjoy yet I never got started. I went looking at sewing machines this past weekend and the choices are overwhelming to say the least. I really just need something to get me started that is easy to use yet something that will last and do what I need it to do. So, any suggestions? I want to make small stuffed animals, pillows, blankets, and maybe some clothes.

If you want to make small things make sure you have one where there is a detachable "tabletop". This means that you have something that looks like a sleeve board to help you manouvre around the little corners.
Good luck....and get a simple cheap machine..unless you want to make very sophisticated things you only need a simple machine...you can always upgrade at a later stage
I actually bought a great machine for a friend last week for $25. at a garage sale. Already she has made two jean skirts and some curtains...$25 well spent I think.

Great, thanks for the tip! I saw a simple looking one on Craigslist today that I think I'll buy.

I would definitely get a free arm machine. I wouldn't pay that much money for one at first--check out Freecycle too. And goodwill, or the equivalent thrift store around your area.

Older is usually better; the newer machines aren't really that great and don't last as long as the older ones. For fabric, try fabric.com, too, because they have great prices.

Thanks Jennifer! I checked out your profile and noticed you have The Dark Crystal listed under movies. I just bought that for my son last night because it was a favorite of mine as a child.
