Siding - what options are out there

So now I'm curious what the best way to go is with siding. We received one quote already for vinyl siding that was almost $9000 but we really don't know what other options are out there. I want something that will last and won't rot as easily. I also wonder what most people have. I did add Blue Vinyl to my list of movies to watch in Netflix and I'm sure it will have many bad things to say about vinyl siding just as Super Size Me made me never want to eat fast food again. *sigh*

Decisions, decisions. Of course we won't have the money for this until October so I have plenty of time to think about this.

EDIT: I think I like the hardiplanks so we'll try and have them requote

Yes, watch Blue Vinyl! The fact that it harms the factory workers and people who live by those factories is terrible. There are other options available without doing vinyl. I think of vinyl as the 21st century version of asbestos siding (which is what I have on my house and I plan to remove and repair the wood siding).

Here's another list of why I don't like it: http://www.oldlouisville.com/circa1900/Vinyl-Lie.htm

Finally, this might give you some good ideas on other options siding:

Plus (and this is totally an opinion) as a historic preservationist, I think vinyl looks cheap and tacky. Sorry. I hope I haven't hurt your feelings. Clearly this is a decision for you, not me, to make. I wish you luck!

Yea, I've been reading about it all morning and will show my husband the links tonight. I'll see if the guys can give me another quote in a different material and then go from there.

Thanks for the info!

Love, love, LOVE Hardiplank. That's what I put on my house. I'm betting it will be quite a bit more than vinyl, but it's better in soooo many ways.
